Austin Maddox: RHP, Florida, 6'3", 225

An exceptional two way prospect out of high school, Maddox looked poised to be a power hitting catcher and power relief pitcher, topping out at 96 according to Perfect Game, for the Gators, with more of a future behind the dish. These days Maddox is mostly pitching and still throwing hard, sitting mid 90s, while his hitting days will be over once he is drafted. He has been the closer for Florida for the last two years, after being named SEC Freshman of the Year, when he only hit.

Maddox’s fastball is a plus offering and his curve is plus at times, usually, average to above average. He has a changeup, but if he continues to pitch out of the pen he may not need it, as it is not a very good pitch at this point. Maddoxpounds the strike zone and is very tough to hit, with only 8 walks in 50.1 innings and a .184 opponent batting average this year with 54 strike outs.

Most teams probably believe that Maddox will relieve at the next level due to his subpar changeup and bulldog mentality that fits better out of the pen, meaning the highest he will be drafted is the supplemental round. At worst, Maddox looks to be a solid middle reliever and will probably have stints as a closer, as his stuff will definitely play there. He should move quickly through the minors.

MLB Comparison: Kenley Jansen
Projected Draft Position: 3rd Round
