Correa is making a strong case to be selected early in 2012, as he is a high schooler with a chance to stick at shortstop, a rarity among prep products. He is above-average across the board defensively with a strong arm, range and actions that all point to a future at short. Even if he outgrows the position, he would certainly project to be a plus third baseman in the future. He runs a 6.79 60 and has good instincts on the bases. Even with his very good defensive tools, he is not a glove only guy, as he has potential to be a solid hitter as well, even though he is very raw at the plate at this point.
Correa possesses an athletic frame (6’3”, 190) and easily projects to add some muscle in the next few years. He attends the Puerto Rican Baseball Academy and is one of the youngest prepsters in the draft who would play his entire first professional season at age 18. At the plate, Correa has a solid line-drive swing with well above-average bat speed. He hits from a spread stance and uses a pullback load to generate good
separation with his hands. His quick hands and strong bat speed project future power and his swing already has some present loft to it. If he fills out more but maintains enough athleticism to stay at short, Correa has one of the highest ceilings in this class. His combination of youth, projectability at the plate
and strong defensive potential point to a very early selection for Correa in 2012.
Comparison: Manny Machado
Projected Draft Position: Top 10 picks
