Matthew Smoral: LHP, Solon HS (OH), 6'8", 225

Smoral is a North Carolina commit with fast and smooth arm action, throwing from a ¾ arm slot. He tends to fall off mound and sits in the high 80s-low 90s, touching the mid 90s with his fastball. Due to his low arm slot, he gets good arm side run on the fastball that comes from a scary angle for hitters thanks to his 6'8" frame. His curveball flashes above average, but he does not get consistent sharp break on it. He uses his changeup sparingly at this point, and his development will likely hinge on its refinement as a third offering.

A stress fracture in his foot this spring caused him to miss much of the spring season and may have hurt his draft stock some, but many still consider him a first round talent. Before the injury, Smoral was getting buzz in the Top 15 and was even mocked in the Top 10 by several different sites. While his fastball is not explosive, like many other high school pitchers in this year’s draft it has good movement, causing it to play up. He looks to be a solid middle of the rotation starter at the next level, with potential for more.

MLB Comparison: Andy Pettitte
Projected Draft Position: 1st Round/Supplemental Round
