Mock Draft #2: West Coast
Our second mock of the year features the first 60 picks with comments on the first rounders. Our writers will alternate picks in our third mock of the year, East vs. West, on Monday.
1) Astros: Mark Appel RHP Stanford University JR
Appel has been getting 1:1 buzz since the beginning of the season and the only knock on him was that he hadn't quite performed up to the level of his electric stuff. This year to date: 9-1, 2.45 ERA, 108 K/22 BB in 103.0 innings. His critics don't have much left to stand on and while the appeal of someone like Buxton is clear, it's hard to go wrong with Appel in this spot.
2) Twins: Mike Zunino C Florida University JR
The Twins can go a lot of directions here. There are elite college arms on the board (Gausman, Zimmer, etc.) and a high upside bat (Buxton). The best bet here, however, is Zunino who has proven at every level that he can hit, handle a pitching staff and be a solid defender behind the plate. The Twins have been looking for an excuse to move Mauer out from behind the dish for awhile, and Zunino could certainly provide that motivation.
3) Mariners: Byron Buxton OF Appling County HS
Buxton is the one definite, can't miss, high upside prospect in this entire class and he won't fall below the Mariners. Much like the Twins, the Mariners need help in a lot of areas and don't have any reason to draft for need. They need the best player available in this spot and that man is Buxton.
4) Orioles: Kevin Gausman RHP Lousiana State University SO
Gausman is a power arm that could be a pretty quick riser in the Baltimore system. He and Bundy would form a pretty scary 1-2 punch in this system and along with Machado, this system is starting to look pretty strong at the top. If Gausman isn't here, I can see the Orioles going with Appel or Zimmer in this spot as well.
5) Royals: Lucas Giolito RHP Harvard-Westlake HS
He's just too tempting in this spot. Giolito was getting serious consideration for the 1:1 spot before a UCL strain this spring and he would have been the first high school righty to be taken first overall. It's easy to see why, as he has absolutely nasty stuff, an ideal frame and scary projectability. The injury makes him a bit of a wild card, and the Royals don't have too much money to spend, but they have enough and would be wise not to let a talent like Giolito fall past them. Recent reports have been positive and Giolito is throwing up to 120 feet pain free, a good sign for teams picking in the Top 10.
6) Cubs: Carlos Correa SS Puerto Rico Baseball Academy
Correa is a very high upside guy who put on a show at the Perfect Game World Showcase. The Cubs have talent up the middle in their system and at the Major League level in Starlin Castro, but Correa is an elite prospect who they might not let slip past them. He could easily slide over to 3B, be a plus defender over there and form a scary left side of the infield with Castro.
7) Padres: Kyle Zimmer RHP University of San Francisco JR
Zimmer's stock has been falling a little bit lately due to some lower velocity readings in his most recent starts, but the projectability and stuff are still there. He's risen on the scene fairly recently but has put up some solid numbers at USF and has the epitome of a power pitcher's profile. He shouldn't fall out of the Top 10.
8) Pirates: Max Fried LHP Harvard-Westlake HS
The second Harvard-Westlake arm to go off the board in the Top 10 (an astounding fact in itself), Fried is a projectable power lefty with an absolute hammer of a curveball. The Padres have a bunch of picks and a lot of money to spend. Fried could be the start of a very solid draft class for them.
9) Marlins: Albert Almora OF Mater Christian HS
Almora makes some sense here. The Marlins have a penchant for prep guys, especially local products, and Almora is a potential all-around talent right in their backyard. He has been a standout for Team USA for years and would be a good fit in Miami. If they want to go with an arm, McCullers is a route that I could definitely see them taking.
10) Rockies: Lance McCullers RHP Jesuit HS
McCullers was initially rumored to be one of the Top 5 players in this year's class and I don't think he'll fall past the Rockies. He has an absolutely electric arm, but has some durability concerns due to his relatively small stature and the effort in his motion. Concerns aside, he has power stuff and will definitely be tried out as a starter at the next level.
11) Athletics: Richie Shaffer 3B Clemson University JR
It's Billy Beane and that means its a collegiate player in the first round. While the A's could be intrigued by an arm like Wacha or Heaney here, they need some bats that can handle the Coliseum and Shaffer seems like an ideal fit. Their system is weak at third base and Shaffer provides a relatively safe power bat at a position of need.
12) Mets: David Dahl OF Oak Mountain HS
Dahl is a potential 5-tool outfielder who has shown flashes of a little bit of everything. He was shut down near the end of the year with a minor injury, but it shouldn't hurt his draft stock too much. The Mets like to look for high upside talent and Dahl and his picture perfect swing easily fit that mold.
13) White Sox: Michael Wacha RHP Texas A+M
The Sox have a history of college guys in the first round and Wacha fits in nicely here. He doesn't have the biggest upside, but he's a solid college starter with an excellent pitching frame and some good deception. A safe bet to be a fairly quick riser.
14) Reds: Marcus Stroman RHP Duke University JR
If Stroman were 6'3", he would easily be in the conversation for a Top 5 selection. He's got absolutely filthy stuff and has a power arm, but the durability concerns are frequently cited. Regardless, he has power stuff and has put up some stellar numbers at Duke.
15) Indians: Courtney Hawkins OF Carroll HS
Hawkins is a big time athlete with big upside. He's got a lot of work to do in order to reach his potential and his hit tool will never be anything special, but he already projects as an excellent defender and the raw power is definitely there.
16) Nationals: Chris Stratton RHP Mississippi State JR
Stratton has pitched his way into first round consideration thanks to some very strong showings this spring. He's not the flashiest arm in the class, but he has above-average stuff and has produced results. He would add to an already imposing rotation in Washington and could be a fairly quick riser throuugh the system.
17) Blue Jays: Matt Smoral LHP Solon HS
Despite being slowed by a foot injury that required surgery, Smoral is still getting first round buzz and his stuff and projectability still remain very attractive. He's a huge presence on the mound at 6'8" and has good stuff already, with easy projectability for more development down the road.
18) Dodgers: Andrew Heaney LHP Oklahoma State University JR
Heaney isn't going to wow you with pure stuff or projectability, but he flat out knows how to pitch and the results have shown that at Ok. State this year. To date, he's 8-2 with a 1.60 ERA and 140 K's in 118.1 innings. At some point, the velocity number just isn't too important, and Heaney is the classic example of why the radar gun isn't always the final product.
19) Cardinals: Gavin Cecchini SS Barbe HS
Cecchini, Garin's younger brother, obviously has good bloodlines and most people believe he can stick at short. He would be an interesting potential replacement for Furcal in the next few years and he's definitely one of the top prep bats in the class.
20) Giants: Deven Marrero SS Arizona State University JR
While I'm not necessarily a big fan of taking Marrero, it's also conceivable that thanks to his lack of upside, he could fall into the lower half of the first round. He's definitely a safe pick, however, and a shortstop with a glove like Marrero's is certainly a rarity, but the bat is a big question mark. He hit the cover off of the ball as a freshman and has always shown the tools, but the results haven't been coming this year. If he regains his stroke, However, Marrero could be a steal at #20.
21) Braves: Victor Roache OF Georgia Southern University JR
I'm gonna echo the East Coast mock here. It makes a lot of sense: the Braves like their in-state talent, and Roache has fallen far enough for a college guy who put up an absurd 30 HR's last year with the BBCOR bats. Power is and always will be in demand, and Roache probably won't make it out of the first round, even with the wrist injury.
22) Blue Jays: Stryker Trahan C Acadiana HS
The Jays have quite a few early picks this year, 14 in the first 10 rounds to be precise, and they've got a whole lot of money to spend to boot. I can see them taking a few risks on high school talents, and Trahan certainly fits the bill. He was getting a lot of buzz early thanks to his strong athleticism and power bat from behind the dish, and he would be an interesting risk for the Jays at 22.
23) Cardinals: Ty Hensley Edmond Santa Fe HS
Hensley is a big upside guy and could continue the trend of solid high school pitchers coming out of Oklahoma.
He throws a heavy fastball and his curveball has shown plus potential. Combine that with good physicality and projectable athleticism and you've got a guy worthy of a look at 20.
24) Red Sox: Corey Seager SS/3B Northwest Cabbarus HS
Seager has gotten a lot of helium this spring thanks to improved reports with the bat. He's always had the physicality, projection and tools to draw some interest, and the development of the bat has pushed him up into the first round discussion.
25) Rays: Zach Eflin RHP Hagerty HS
Eflin is an in-state guy for the Rays who has been a big topic of discussion recently. He jumped onto the scene with a big velocity spike this year and then went down with an injury. All reports are good though, and his first start in his return saw him sitting in the low-90s and showing his breaking stuff. He's a big, projectable guy that could easily fit into the pitching prospect machine that is the Tampa minor league system.
26) Diamondbacks: Pierce Johnson RHP Missouri State University JR
The D-Backs don't have too much money to play with and Johnson is one of the safer selections that they could make here both in terms of price and a prospect with a high floor. Johnson is a prototypical power guy who has the potential to fit into the middle of their rotation in the near future.
27) Brewers: Addison Russell SS/3B Pace HS
Russell is a solid first round talent if he can stay at shortstop. There have been varying reports, both positive and negative, about his physique and recent weight loss, but the tools are all still there. He's definitely an athlete with some raw power whose bat would play much better if he stayed at short in the long run.
28) Brewers: Brian Johnson LHP Florida University JR
Back-to-back picks for the Brew Crew here. They'll most likely go for some balance between high-risk guys and some safer picks, and Johnson seems like a suitable counterpart to the riskier Russell.
29) Rangers: Tyler Naquin OF Texas A+M JR Naquin is a pure hitter. The only knock on him, and a very persistent one at that, is that he fits the "tweener" mold quite well. Not enough power for a corner, not enough range for center. Then again, he will hit for a high average, steal some bases and he has an absolute cannon for an arm. He'll find a place on defense and he's an interesting home state pick for the Rangers at 29.
30) Yankees: Tanner Rahier SS Palm Desert HS
A lifelong Derek Jeter fan, Rahier's storybook tale begins here. He's a tireless worker who plays for the wood bat ABD leagues instead of high school program. Rahier profiles to stick at short and has some pop in his bat. Derek Jeter is 37, just sayin'.
31) Red Sox: Walker Weickel RHP Olympia HS
Weickel got some Top 15 buzz early thanks to his solid present stuff, lanky 6'6" frame and a whole lot of deception. He hasn't had the strongest string, despite playing for one of the best HS teams in the nation, and has slid a little bit. He shouldn't slide too far, and will probably nullify the signability concerns if taken this high.
32) Twins: Pat Light RHP Monmouth University JR
33) Padres: Lucas Sims RHP Brockwood HS
34) Athletics: Lewis Brinson OF Coral Springs HS
35) Mets: Nick Travieso RHP Archbishop McCarthy HS
36) Cardinals: Joey Gallo 3B Bishop Gorman HS
37) Red Sox: Barrett Barnes OF Texas Tech University JR
38) Brewers: Rio Ruiz 3B Bishop Amat HS
39) Rangers: Clate Schmidt RHP Allatoona HS
40) Phillies: Ty Buttrey RHP Providence HS
41) Astros: Travis Jankowski OF Stony Brook University JR
42) Twins: James Ramsey OF Florida State University SR
43) Cubs: Rhett Wiseman OF Buckingham, Browne + NIchols HS
44) Padres: Adam Brett Wallker OF/1B Jacksonville University OF
45) Pirates: J.O. Berrios RHP Juan XXIII HS (Puerto Rico)
46) Rockies: Peter O'Brien C Miami University SR
47) Athletics: Mitch Haniger OF Cal Poly University
48) White Sox: Nolan Fontana SS Florida University
49) Reds: Daniel Robertson 3B Upland HS
50) Blue Jays: Dylan Baker RHP Western Nevada College
51) Dodgers: Shane Watson RHP Lakewood HS
52) Cardinals: Chase DeJong RHP Woodrow Wilson HS
53) Rangers: D.J. Davis OF Stone HS
54) Phillies: Cody Poteet RHP San Diego Christian HS
55) Padres: Tony Renda 2B California JR
56) Cubs: Chris Beck RHP Georgia Southern University JR
57) Reds: Austin Maddox RHP Florida University JR
58) Blue Jays: Nolan Sanburn RHP Arkansas University JR
59) Cardinals: Kenny Diekroger 2B/SS Stanford University JR
60) Blue Jays: Nick Williams OF Galveston Ball HS
Mock Draft 1.0: East Coast
Our first mock of the year features the first and supplemental rounds, comments on all of the first rounders and slot bonuses as mandated by the new CBA for every pick. The West Coast Mock will be up on Saturday Morning!
1) Astros: Kevin Gausman RHP Louisiana State SO
It would be hard to pass up Byron Buxton, but the Astros are reportedly looking at college players and I believe Gausman to be the number one college player, as well as the number one player overall ($7,200,000)
2) Twins: Mike Zunino C Florida JR
The Twins would like to move Joe Mauer to first and Zunino could be the catcher that succeeds him behind the plate, as he looks like a can't miss Major League player. ($6,200,000)
3) Mariners: Byron Buxton OF Appling County HS
The Mariners are looking for hitting over pitching, evidenced by their trade for Jesus Montero and Buxton could be a staple in centerfield for years to come.( $5,200,000)
4) Orioles: Mark Appel RHP Stanford JR
The Orioles are stockpiling young arms and add one here to their gameplan. Appel is a premium arm that will rise quickly, to pair with Dylan Bundy at the front of their rotation with Arrieta, Matusz and Hammel for years. ($4,200,000)
5) Royals: Kyle Zimmer RHP San Francisco JR
The Royals looked to have one of the most stacked minor league pitching staffs two years ago, but with injuries and lack of consistency, their minor league pitching talent has been depleted, here is their chance to regain some of what was lost. ($3,500,000)
6) Cubs: Carlos Correa SS Puerto Rico Baseball Academy HS
They already have Starlin Castro and selected Javier Baez last year in the first round, but if the Cubs continue their trend of acquiring premium, high upside talent and the best available player, it is harder to find more upside at this point. ($3,250,000)
7) Padres: Lucas Giolito RHP Harvard Westlake HS
The Padres have money to spend with 14 picks in the first 10 rounds and could go above slot here and take a flier on this injured California prep and gamble on his huge upside, as long as they make safer picks later on. ($3,000,000)
8) Pirates: Marcus Stroman RHP Duke JR
A potentially filthy top three in their rotation with Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon and the Pirates already have a plethora of young hitters on their MLB roster and farm system. ($2,900,000)
9) Marlins: David Dahl OF Oak Mountain HS
The Marlins could look to stay in state here with fellow outfielder Albert Almora, but Dahl's upside is undeniable. ($2,800,000)
10) Rockies: Lance McCullers RHP Jesuit HS
McCullers fits the profile of a Rockie from Jesuit HS and is the type of power arm that the Rockies need to miss bats in Coors Field. ($2,700,000)
11) Athletics: Richie Shaffer 3B Clemson JR
The A's love college bats and Shaffer, even though he is not lefty, is the best one still on the board. If Stroman were still on the board here, I could see that, as Billy Beane has identified undersized power arms as the next market inefficiency. ( $2,625,000 )
12) Mets: Stryker Trahan C Acadiana HS
The Mets are looking for high upside talent with their new front office regime and need a catcher. Starting with Nimmo last year they showed that they are willing to overdraft someone they like if they have to and although I believe that Trahan is a steal at this point, most believe he is a late first round pick. ( $2,550,000)
13) White Sox: Courtney Hawkins OF Carroll HS
The White Sox love high upside power bats and Hawkins fits that bill perfectly. ($2,475,000)
14) Reds: Max Fried LHP Harvard-Westlake HS Most consider Fried an elite level arm, and that is what the Reds need. They believe that they spent wisely on Aroldis Chapman and will continue the power lefty trend here. ($2,375,000)
15) Indians: Albert Almora OF Mater Academy HS The Indians should be interested in drafting a strong right handed bat to complement their predominantly left handed lineup. ($2,250,000 )
16 Nationals: Michael Wacha RHP Texas A&M JR
Wacha is a solid mid-first round choice and would be a very tough starter in the middle of a rotation already containing many young potentially front line starters. The Nationals have discovered a winning formula: pitching, pitching and more pitching. ($2,125,000)
17) Blue Jays: Ty Hensley RHP Santa Fe HS
The Blue Jays can hit, but they know that they will have to continue to stockpile young arms to compete in the tough AL East. ($2,000,000)
18) Dodgers: Stephen Piscotty 3B Stanford JR
The Dodgers have to really like this Stanford product and could really use a third baseman at the minor league level at this point. Keep Magic smiling. ($1,950,000)
19) Cardinals: Deven Marrero SS Arizona State JR
Rafael Furcal is aging and Marrero is the solid middle infield type that the Cardinals love and need for the future. A no brainer at this point. ($1,900,000)
20) Giants: Tanner Rahier SS HS
The Giants did not acquire Jose Reyes in free agency and are still looking for their shortstop of the future and although there are questions regarding whether Rahier can stick at short, if the Giants believe he will, they would love to add this California prep's bat to the lineup down the road. ($1,850,000)
21) Braves: Victor Roache OF Georgia Southern JR
The Braves love drafting within state and Roache provides a power bat that could bolster the Braves aging lineup sooner rather than later. ($1,825,000)
22) Blue Jays: Gavin Cecchini SS Barbe HS
With few minor league middle infield prospects and money to spend, even after taking Hensley, the Jays would be extremely pleased to have this highly regarded high school shortstop fall into their lap. ($1,800,000)
23) Cardinals: Chris Stratton RHP Mississippi State JR
The Cardinals really know how to develop their pitchers and like to go for guys that produce and Stratton has certainly produced this season for Mississippi State. ($1,775,000)
24) Red Sox: Corey Seager 3B Northwest Cabarrus HS
The Red Sox already have Middlebrooks looking like the 3rd baseman of the future, however Seager's talent is undeniable and the Sox go for best available here, as they usually do. ($1,750,000)
25) Rays: Tyler Naquin OF Texas A&M JR
The Rays always seem to have brilliant drafts and this year should be no different, as they know talent when they see it. Although Naquin does not appear to be a big high upside guy, he really knows how to play the game. ($1,725,000)
26) Diamondbacks: Matthew Smoral LHP Solon HS
The Diamondbacks are continually looking for pitching and this high upside lefty could be a very nice addition to their already deep collection of arms. ($1,700,000)
27) Brewers Zach Eflin P Hagerty HS
Eflin has been rising up draft prospect charts and the Brewers are always looking for upside to replenish their depleted farm system. Florida high schooler is not a bad place to start. ($1,675,000)
28) Brewers: Addison Russell SS Pace HS
Seems like the Brew Crew has spent a lot of time in the Sunshine State and could really use an impact bat at either short or third for the future. Will have to go more conservative from here. ($1,650,000)
29) Rangers: Lucas Sims RHP Brookwood HS
Power arm, can get up to the high 90s, enough said. Nolan Ryan keeps his maniacal smile. ($1,625,000)
30) Yankees: Shane Watson RHP Lakewood HS
The Yankees like going with high school upside and Watson sure fits the description of boom or bust. ($1,600,000)
31) Red Sox: Dane Phillips C Oklahoma City JR
Phillips' road in college has been interesting to say the least, but his position and bat will certainly attract the Sox. ($1,575,000)
32) Twins: Andrew Heaney LHP Oklahoma State JR. ($1,550,000)
33) Padres: Joey Gallo 3B Bishop Gorman HS ($1,525,000)
34) Athletics: Barrett Barnes OF Texas Tech JR ($1,500,000)
35) Mets: Daniel Robertson 3B Upland HS ($1,467,400)
36) Cardinals: Pierce Johnson P Missouri State JR ( $1,430,400)
37) Red Sox: Mitchell Brown P Rochester Century HS ( $1,394,300)
38) Brewers: DJ Davis OF Stone HS ($1,359,100)
39) Rangers: Nick Travieso P Archbishop McCarthy HS ($1,324,800)
40) Phillies: Hunter Virant P Camarillo HS ($1,291,300)
41) Astros: Peter O'Brien C Miami SR ($1,258,700)
42) Twins: James Ramsey OF Florida State SR ($1,227,000)

Phillips' road in college has been interesting to say the least, but his position and bat will certainly attract the Sox. ($1,575,000)
